Ceramics and woodfiring course
WITH ROBBIE HEIDINGER
Form into Fire
“While watching a plant grow, seeing its intention, you can see that it’s perfect. It uses just the right shape, amount of color and texture to fulfill its pliant, living design. (...)”
Robbie Heidinger looks at everything around her through this “curious eye” of hers. Life and its organic forms have become the source of inspiration for the artwork she has been developing. In this course, Robbie will guide participants in this world of discovery, seeking to help them make the most of their ideas and creativity through her vast experience.
The focus of work in this course will be on slab construction techniques to help the student form either sculptural or functional pieces. Stencil, mono-printing, and straight on slip application techniques will be demonstrated and explored. From there, we will discuss and choose which pieces enhance the clay forms and would better benefit from exposure to the flames in the kiln.
All participants will have the opportunity to bake their own pieces in our Sasukenei - Smokeless Oven. The moment of the woodfiring, the dynamic dialogue between form and fire and the active participation in this process makes it an unique experience that everyone can be a part of.
Robbie Heidinger - Ceramist
Robbie Heidinger was born in the U.S.A and completed her degree in painting from New York University. She started being interested in working with clay from her desire to have a three-dimensional canvas. Her ceramic work of the last two decades is the result of a constant exploration of the intersection between painting and clay.
In her biomorphic pieces, she seeks the abstraction of organic forms. “My work is very tactile,” says the ceramist, “it fulfills the need to feel something natural and attractive, and it seduces and rewards its viewer with a connection to organic structures, to life.”
Robbie Heidinger's work is spread all over the world: in museums, galleries and universities. For the past two years, she has been a guest artist at Blanc de Chine International Artist Residency and Shangyu Celadon Modern International Artist Residency (China).
