This is a truly comprehensive course on making green wood furniture, shared in the stunning surroundings of Cerdeira.   There are two basic methods of construction used in green wood furniture making, and by the end of this course you will be conversant in both.  You'll learn the technical basics of how to work with green wood; splitting and shaping with hand tools, then use these two different methodologies to make unique furniture by hand.

Over eight days, including a rest day immersed in nature, you'll learn the basics of green woodworking techniques by building two different pieces of furniture with freshly cut wood from the surrounding mountains. You will be encouraged to add unique shapes to your pieces by exploring steam bending. You'll also learn how to handle, sharpen, and care for your tools, to continue your creative journey at home

This course is perfect for beginners eager to work with wood in direct contact with nature, as well as for professionals and enthusiasts looking to deepen and refresh their skills.

 At the end, you'll take home two new pieces of furniture, all made by hand.

This course will give you:

• Two beautifully unique crafted stools, designed and made by you;

• Practical and specialised knowledge of basic techniques for working with green wood;

• Hands-On experience: build two stools using two different techniques (slab & stick and post & rung), plus steam bending. 

• Sharpened tools - Well sharpende and cared tool are fundamental to the success of our work, so you’ll learn how to sharpen and maintain your tools.

Additional Information

• Previous Experience: this course doesn’t require any previous experience. If you have prior experience with green wood, this course is perfect to refine and enhance your skills.

• Sharpening tools: If you have some good old chisels at home that you want to bring back to life, just bring them with you! We can also advise you on a simple sharpening kit to keep your tools forever sharp. Get in touch with us to know more! 

• Travel Considerations: Please note that the woven stool to build cannot be disassembled. If you are traveling from abroad, contact us to discuss options for transporting your stool!

GREEN WOODWORKING course details

Production of two hand built furniture pieces: a stool and a chair with a woven seat.

Practical and theoretical knowledge with both slab & stick and post & rung wood working techniques.

Practical and theoretical knowledge on wood working tool sharpening, care and maintenance.

June 1st:

3:00 pm: Accommodation and check-in of participants 

5:00 pm: Reception at the Atelier and presentation of the group and trainers;

7:00 pm: Welcome dinner

June 2nd to 9th: 

Course from 10 am to 6 pm, with a two-hour lunch break (1pm to 3pm)

June 10th:

Until 11 am: check-out from accommodation

CONDITIONS:

• Deadline for enrollment: April 1st 2027.

THE COURSE FEE INCLUDES:

• Integration in a small group of participants;

• Training 6 hours a day, spoken in English and Portuguese;

Leave extra space in your luggage!

We recommend bringing extra space in your luggage to take your pieces home at the end of the course. 

Shipping options available are not ideal or cost-effective for medium to large objects  – personal transport is strongly recommended.

CANCELLATION POLICY FOR COURSES AND WORKSHOPS

You may withdraw within 14 days of registration, paying the correspondent transfer fees. Following the EU consumer protection legislation, payments are not refunded past 14 days of registration. The payment will be fully reimbursed if the training cannot be held because of insufficient students.

Suppose the training is canceled by Cerdeira - Home For Creativity for reasons of significant force such as a pandemic, civil disorder, a natural catastrophe, medical or family issues of the teacher, and others beyond our control. In that case, Cerdeira will offer a voucher for a different workshop of your choice. The voucher is valid for two years.

PAYMENT INSTALLMENT OPTIONS

You can pay for the course in up to 5 monthly installments, depending on the course. Payments are automatically deducted from your chosen payment method starting from the date you submit your registration form. Please be aware that additional costs for this service apply, depending on the selected installment plan. At checkout, after selecting your preferred option, make sure to review the total amount to be paid before completing your registration. Please note that if installment payments are not fulfilled within the established timeframe, your registration will be canceled without a refund of the amounts already paid.
