CERAMICS AND OVERGLAZING course

Infinite Skies - decorative techniques on black clay
In the Ceramics and Overglazing Course - Infinite Skies, Douglas will share creative & decorative processes in both his ceramic art and functional works, emphasizing on decorative techniques, including overglaze enamels & lusters.
Douglas Black’s ceramic work transmits a cosmic feel, by applying colored glazes onto a black clay background. This is a different approach from the traditional Japanese ceramics that the artist is going to bring to Cerdeira.
In this course, Douglas is going to teach how to dissolve boundaries through a playful approach from building a sculpture together to turning a series of favorite functional vessels to enjoy at the table.
In practice, you will explore and focus on layering techniques by slip application, scraffito, wax resist, glaze, overglaze & lusters, all together, through the use of symbols & marks to develop your own cosmic creations.
Whether expressing yourself through sculpture or engaging in the beauties of simplicity for utilitarian ware, the possibilities with clay are as infinite as the universe of its composition. From the night sky to nature in Cerdeira, this will be the course and the place to be inspired by everything surrounding us. We’ll be guided by Douglas, who will encourage us in this discovery.
Douglas Black
Douglas Black has been an American artist based in Japan since 1990, where he built a kiln and began an independent studio in 1992. His works embrace both function and wonder, celebrating the culture's mindful appreciation in the presentations of food, spirits, tea, and our flower friends. His sculptures explore the ceramic palette and other mediums, ground to the planet and reaching to the stars like those before us.
Douglas has taught workshops and exhibited his work all over the world. He will now share his knowledge and inspiration in Cerdeira. Find out more about this artist and his work here.

SCHEDULE:
May 28th: 4 pm to 7 pm
May 29th to June 6th: 10 am to 6 pm (two hours lunch break)
CONDITIONS
• Enrollments up to 2 months before the course start date.
• Special discount for our community members.
THE COURSE FEE INCLUDES:
• Integration in a small workgroup (from 7 to 10 participants)
• Training 6 hours a day, speaking in English and with support in Portuguese;
• Studio open 12 hours a day;
• Welcome dinner;
• Lunch on course days;
• All the materials needed for the course, including firings
• Free accommodation in our hostel during the course (upon availability). The hostel is equipped with a dormitory, kitchen, shared bathrooms, washing machine, towels, bed linen, and wi-fi;
• 10% discount on the base rate when booking an individual house (minimum of 2 nights). The base rate refers to a stay of 2 people and includes breakfast, equipped kitchen, towels, bed linen, and wi-fi.

CANCELLATION POLICY FOR COURSES AND WORKSHOPS
You may withdraw within 14 days of registration, paying the correspondent transfer fees. Following the EU consumer protection legislation, payments are not refunded past 14 days of registration. The payment will be fully reimbursed if the training cannot be held because of insufficient students.
Suppose the training is canceled by Cerdeira - Home For Creativity for reasons of significant force such as a pandemic, civil disorder, a natural catastrophe, medical or family issues of the teacher, and others beyond our control. In that case, Cerdeira will offer a voucher for a different workshop of your choice. The voucher is valid for two years.
