Renato Costa e Silva always takes us to the center of all inquiry, and in this course he shares his vast knowledge about sculpture and ceramics with us. To study and work under the guidance of this artist is a unique opportunity to gain a deep understanding of ceramic processes.
Together with Kerstin Thomas he will support each student to progress and take home sculptures that reflects not only the achievement of knowledge but also the expression of your personal project.
Renato Costa e Silva, ceramista e escultor, conta em 40 anos de actividade profissional com um vasto currículo não só na área da cerâmica como também de escultura de grandes dimensões para espaços públicos em diversos materiais.
Natural de Angra do Heroísmo, vive e trabalha no seu atelier em Angra do Heroísmo e na Cerdeira. Fez um estudo intensivo de barros e materiais cerâmicos e tem uma larga experiência na preparação de pastas cerâmicas e vidrados, ao longo dos anos ele realizou centenas de cozeduras de cerâmica a lenha.
Kerstin Thomas, escultora, estudou Artes Plásticas e Talha / Escultura em madeira na Alemanha, país de origem. Já em Portugal, licenciou-se em Língua e Cultura Portuguesas pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra e frequentou ainda o Curso de Ciências Sociais. Com preferência por madeiras autóctones, desenvolve entre outros um trabalho inspirado na vivência rural e na expressividade do rosto humano. A construção do Forno sem Fumo para cozedura de cerâmica de alta temperatura despertou o seu interesse pela cerâmica como meio de expressão.
Co-fundadora do projecto Cerdeira Home for Creativity, concilia actualmente o seu trabalho artístico com o de coordenadora do Programa Artístico do projecto.
TAKE HOME THE RESULTS FIRED IN THE SASUKENEI KILN
PROGRAM
Day 1
Introduction;
Awakening the imagination - From the expanding universe to the nature of the imagined;
From thought to matter - The personal universe and the choice of relevant elements to conceive individual projects;
Clay as a receptor of emotions - From physical structure and chemical composition to ceramic pastes for sculpture; Composition, experimentation and preparation of pastes;
Day 2 and Day 3
Working on personal projects;
Day 4
Introduction to woodfiring - processes, history and results. Ceramic's transformation during firing and how to control the process;
Loading the kiln;
Start the woodfiring in the SASUKENEI – Smokless kiln;
Day 5
Woodfiring;
Day 6
Cooling of the kiln;
Hike with observation of clays in the local soil;
Day 7
Opening the kiln - appreciation and interpretation of the result.
Conditions
The workshop fee includes the following:
Working in a small group (4-6 pax)
Tuition of 6 – 8 hours per day with a technical assistant (in english and portuguese)
Studio open 12 hours per day
All materials
Free accomodation in shared room in our Residency House (shared house, fully equipped with kitchen, bathrooms, washing machine, Wifi) or a 10% discount for accommodation in our Private Houses (2 nights minimum)
