CERAMICS course

WITH EDDIE CURTIS

New Horizons - A naturalistic and observational approach to Ceramics

"My approach is mostly empirical, a necessary attitude when we want to obtain interesting results, to better respond to the unexpected that happens when we work with the basic elements like earth and fire."

The New Horizons Ceramics Course celebrates an approach to ceramics through observation and nature and is designed for participants to discover a new relationship with clay, a passage that could take their work down new paths and profound changes.

Eddie Curtis' ceramic work highlights and incorporates references to landscapes in a wider sense, using a range of techniques to arrive at his composite forms and their textures.

He demonstrates how to combine simple techniques to obtain a seemingly complex form that leaves no guesses as to its elementary origins. Discovering the potential of this process opens doors to experimentation, new discoveries and inspiration for a path of its own.

The wood-firing in the last days of the New Horizons Ceramics Course at Sasukenei - Smokeless Kiln further reinforces this approach to Eddie Curtis' ceramics. The high temperature firing will enrich his pieces through natural ash glazes, ash deposits and new textures.

Eddie Curtis

After training in ceramics at the Bath Academy of Arts, Eddie Curtis opened his studio in 1979 in Middle Rigg (OK), producing mainly utilitarian crockery. Soon afterwards he began to develop his artistic work, exploring shapes, textures and colours of glazes. Today he is known worldwide for his expressive and unique pieces and has exhibited from Europe to Japan. His work has also been recognised by several international awards, and we are happy to welcome him to Cerdeira for the first time.
