Japanese Pottery and Ikebana Course

with shirobey kobayashi

“... to have health, one needs to have safe and delicious food. It needs beautiful plates and plating to look delicious to eat delicious food.”

- Shirobey Kobayashi

The Japanese Pottery and Ikebana course with Shirobey Kobayashi offers a unique immersion in ceramics, wood-firing, and Japanese culture.

It is a program dedicated to ceramics and the creation of pieces, always in a broader context. The pursuit of beauty and functionality to integrate into everyday life when serving food, tea, or flower arrangements, is the essence of Japanese culture

His philosophy of life is based on peace of mind, which means (for him) living with simple and beautiful things that enhance the aesthetic sense of life.  During the japanese pottery and ikebana course, Shirobey Kobayashi will share with us his philosophy of life-based on this peace of mind, which means living with simple and beautiful things that enhance the aesthetic sense of life.

He will teach you how to integrate ceramics and natural beauty into everyday life through Ikebana and the values and care to be taken when plating food. You'll learn and practise ceramic techniques such as tebineri (hand techniques) and rokuro (potter's wheel) to create chawan, vessels, and bowls, and you'll actively participate in all stages of wood-firing in our 36-hour Sasukenei - Smokeless Kiln. We'll also take part in cooking and enjoying a Japanese meal on the day the kiln cools down.

On the last day, you'll take these pieces home with you, after celebrating our learning with a Japanese tea ceremony.

Shirobey Kobayashi

Shirobey Kobayashi was born in Japan in 1955 and has dedicated his life to beauty and art. After traveling the world for seven years, he returned to Japan and settled in Mashiko, a place steeped in ceramics tradition and the work of Shoji Hamada, who, together with Bernard Leach, revolutionized the world of studio pottery in Europe and the United States.

It was here that he learnt to work in ceramics as a self-taught artist, built his first wood-fired kiln and embarked on a journey of intense learning, made up of failures and successes, in search of aesthetic values that fit in with his philosophy and way of life. A life in search of beauty, present in everything, and in which everything is connected, from ceramics to organic food production and cookery, but also in the construction of houses and furniture.

As a ceramist, Shirobey creates unique pieces, large vases, objects, and crockery, fired for 5 to 7 days in his Anagama kiln. The ashes from the fire are deposited on the pieces, forming natural glazes with unique colors and effects that fascinate him.

Shirobey Kobayashi exhibits regularly in Tokyo and around the world. He has shared his knowledge in various artist residencies and workshops around the world, including countries such as Australia, the USA, Brazil, and Korea. He is coming to Portugal for the first time to share his work and way of life at Cerdeira - Home for Creativity.
