introduction to willow basketry

Basket weaving with plant fibers is one of the oldest and most eco-friendly traditional crafts. Using native plants — like bulrush, rush, willow, or olive shoots — just a pair of scissors and our hands, we can create beautiful and useful baskets.
In this workshop, we’ll be working with willow. You’ll learn how to identify it, prepare it, and weave it. With a few simple techniques, you’ll make your own small round basket to take home at the end of the day.

Tânia Grazinas Mendes, with a background in History and a passion for Ethnography, has been dedicated to willow basketry since 2022, learning traditional techniques from master weavers across Portugal. In her work, she blends traditional knowledge with a contemporary touch, creating unique, eco-friendly, and sustainable pieces.
Driven by a love for sharing knowledge, she teaches basketry to both adults and children through individual classes and group workshops.
She is also the founder of Cestaria Andorinha, a project where she shares her work and her passion for this ancient craft.

CONDITIONS
Suitable for beginners from 10 years old.
Prior registration required. This activity runs for 3 hours.

The workshop will only take place if the minimum number of participants is met. If it’s canceled due to low registration, all fees will be fully refunded.

CANCELLATION POLICY FOR COURSES AND WORKSHOPS
You may withdraw within 14 days of registration, paying the correspondent transfer fees. Following the EU consumer protection legislation, payments are not refunded past 14 days of registration. The payment will be fully reimbursed if the training cannot be held because of insufficient students.
Suppose the training is canceled by Cerdeira - Home For Creativity for reasons of significant force such as a pandemic, civil disorder, a natural catastrophe, medical or family issues of the teacher, and others beyond our control. In that case, Cerdeira will offer a voucher for a different workshop of your choice. The voucher is valid for two years.
