Slow down...

When we think of wood carving, images of religious or tribal works, geometric carvings, oriental facades or ornaments on furniture in our grandparents' homes, immediately come to mind. It is true that wood carving has a long history throughout the world, as wood was an abundant raw material in most regions and relatively easy to work with.

With a wide variety of approaches and purposes, we find technical knowledge and an ever-present deep respect for wood as the common denominators. Being part of trees, who are also closely linked to the sacred, to life, in the mythology of many cultures. This is the starting point of our course ‘Introduction to Wood Carving’, respect for the raw material that receives and materialises our ideas.

Wood is pleasant to work with, a material associated with comfort that connects us to nature, as woodcarving does not require large equipment or noisy machinery. Using only hand tools such as chisels, gouges and mallets, the works are created at a calm and persistent pace. Giving the process the time it needs, without the rush of everyday life, means getting to know and communicating with the material, allowing the tools to become an extension of our hands, guided by our minds and dreams.

This course is an introduction to carving techniques, tool handling and maintenance, different types of wood and their properties, offering space and time to slow down.
