Creating Sounds with Ceramics workshop

with Martín Gastón Merlos e Julieta Bilbao

-Nómada Cerámica-

The Creating Sounds with Ceramics workshop will introduce the participants to the world of sound ceramics, guided by Martín and Julieta.

In our village, Nómada Cerámica will share their practice focused on researching and experimenting with the specific materials of each geography.They will also connect us to the five elements - the dialog between clay, water and air; transformation through the action of fire; and the intangible embodiment of sound.

Inspired by visual and sound aesthetics of America ancient cultures, in this 3-day workshop you’ll be able to learn how to make your own aerophone ceramic instruments.

In the end, you’ll take home four types of whistles, one sculptural globular flute (ocarina) and one tubular flute, along with this culture immersive and creative experience in Cerdeira.

What will you learn in this workshop?

  • The sounds of Ancient America - historical and geographical contextualization of the cultures that have created aerophonic ceramic instruments.

  • Manual techniques for ceramic construction, such as pinch, roll, and plate construction technique.

  • Design and construction of 4 different whistles (small format), 1 globular flute and 1 tubular flute (medium format);

  • Making the sound system;

  • Sculptural decoration and modeling;

  • Woodfiring;

Martín Gastón Merlos and Julieta Bilbao are two ceramicists from Argentina. Martín is a ceramics and sculpture professor at the National University of La Plata (UNLP); Julieta is a photographer, ceramist, and cultural manager. Together, they created the Nómada Cerámica project.

Martín and Julieta specialize in sound ceramics, ceramic design/production, and design/construction of ceramic kilns. They have worked in the field for 15 years and held conferences, workshops, residencies, and concerts in Latin America since 2017. This is their first workshop in Europe, and they were invited by Cerdeira - Home for Creativity.

By creating sound sculptural objects, Nómada Céramica’s work traces a genealogy between the past and the present, bringing to life an aesthetic, poetic, and sacred language that survives in the transdisciplinarity of this project, adapted to innovation in contemporary artistic practice. In Nómada Cerámica, all these languages coexist ceramics, sculpture, music, anthropology, and archaeology.
