The Ceramics Workshop for Beginners offers an intensive and embracing approach.
Understanding to the whole ceramics process from preparation of clay to form giving, from glazing to tools making and firing , thats what we propose. Five days of intense ceramic work, conversation and silence in our studio,
Knowing and choosing the right clay for our work and for each ceramic technique is fundamental for successful work. We will create our pieces, moulding and modelling, building or working on the potter's wheel, get to know the advantages of each technique and take advantage of this newly acquired knowledge.
You’ll have access to a small specialised library available for those who wish to be inspired or to deepen what they have learned.
At the end of the Ceramics Workshop for Beginners, we learn to fire our works, draw conclusions about the firing processes and, of course, take home some very special artworks
The course is concieved to enable participants to continue exploring and seeking knowledge in this vast and interesting area in autonomy after the workshop.

Renato Costa e Silva
Renato Costa e Silva, ceramicist and sculptor, with 40 years of professional activity has a vast curriculum not only in the area of ceramics but also of large public sculpture in various materials. Born in Angra do Heroísmo, Azores, where he lives and works, he has carried out an intensive study of clay and ceramic materials and has a long experience in the preparation of ceramic pastes and glazes. Over the years he has conducted hundreds of wood firings.
Kerstin Thomas
Kerstin Thomas, sculptor for almost 30 years, studied wood carving and sculpture in her home country, Germany. Once in Portugal, she studied Portuguese Language and Culture at the Language Faculty in Coimbra University. With a preference for autochthonous wood, her work is inspired by rural life and the expressiveness of the human face. The construction of the Sasukenei-Smokeless Kiln for high temperature wood fired ceramics in 2015 was the beginning of finding in ceramics a new way of artistic expression. Co-founder of the Cerdeira-Home for Creativity project, she divides her time between her art practice and her work as coordinator of the village's Artistic Program.
CERAMICS workshop FOR BEGINNERS details
CERAMICS WORKSHOP FOR BEGINNERS PROGRAM:
Identification of clays and their characteristics and functions;
Forming techniques: moulding, shaping, turning, roll and plate construction;
Techniques of decoration in ceramics and pottery;
Tools making;
Construction and operation of a small rudimentary kiln (paper kiln, wood-fired or gas-fired kiln)
SCHEDULE:
10h-13h and 15h-18h*
*The schedule is flexible on the days the kiln firing starts and ends.
Workshop open from 18h - 21h
CONDITIONS
• Enrollments up to 1 month before the course start date.
• 10% discount on the total cost of the course if you make a prompt-payment at least 2 months before the course start date.
THE CERAMICS WORKSHOP FOR BEGINNERS FEE INCLUDES:
• Integration in a small workgroup (from 8 to 12 participants)
• Training 6 hours a day, spoken in Portuguese and English
• Studio open 12 hours a day;
• All the materials needed for the course;
Welcome Dinner
• Free accommodation in our shared residences during the course (upon availability). The residences are equipped with a dormitory, kitchen, shared bathrooms, washing machine, towels, bed linen and wi-fi;
• 10% discount on the base rate when booking an individual house (minimum of 2 nights). The base rate refers to a stay of 2 people and includes breakfast, equipped kitchen, towels, bed linen and wi-fi.
