Autumn Getaway: Deer Rut Season in Portugal

In Serra da Lousã, the arrival of autumn is marked by one of the most interesting phenomena in the animal world: the deer rut.

There are other deer populations around Portugal, but Serra da Lousã (between Coimbra and Leiria) is one of the most privileged places for those who want to watch this incredible event.

In this mountain range, the deer population was extinct for about 200 years due to the action of man and the reduction of its habitat. In 1995, they were reintroduced in this area and today, 25 years later, they already have a population of more than three thousand animals living in the wild.

What is the deer rut (“brama”)?

In the beginning of autumn, the deer perform their mating ritual, known as the “Brama” in portuguese. In this period, the deer start to “sing” with the aim of courting the females and, at the same time, intimidate the remaining rival males. As they choose more open places to show off and attract females, it is easier to see them at this time of the year.

In addition to the incredible sounds that are heard from miles away, it’s also possible to see the males fighting and pushing each other with their rods, trying to claim for themselves the best territories to attract the females.

Listening to the powerful roars echoing through the mountains is a unique and unforgettable experience for those who are lucky enough to see it.

When does it happen?

As a rule of thumb, it’s possible to start listening to deer roars from mid-September until October / November. These are the ideal months to observe this phenomenon. For those who don’t have the opportunity to visit Serra da Lousã at this time, it’s also frequent to observe the deer among the vegetation during the rest of the year. In Cerdeira, it’s sometimes even possible to see the deer walking the streets of the village at night.

How to see it?

  • Right after dawn, at dusk and during the night, these are the most favorable moments for these sightings, although they can occur at other times.

  • It is normal for the deer to be more agitated at this time, so it is important to keep the distance from the animals so that we can observe them safely. Binoculars are a good ally!

  • It is important to be as quiet as possible, because as soon as they hear a noise or feel our presence, the deer quickly run away.

  • With some luck and attention, you can venture out alone on the mountain trails to watch the deer. To try to get closer to the males, it is recommended to go in the company of a guide who knows the mountain and knows how to interpret the signs of their presence, such as their footprints and excrements.

  • In the mountains, there’s not only deer! Keep an eye out for the rest of the mountain animal life, such as wild boar, foxes, rabbits and squirrels. You may be lucky to find one along the way!
