Sculpture by Fire

Ceramics is a huge world; ceramic sculpture  another.  Here, ceramic techniques and processes converge with the freedom to shape, construct ideas and arquitecture messages in clay, made to endure.
The final word  will have the fire and the wood, in a prolonged high-temperature firing.

It is back our Ceramic sculpture and wood-firing course, where creative freedom is grounded in a solid technical understanding of clay formation and clay preparation, shaping techniques and knowledge of the firing process.

From the figurative to the abstract, from carefullty planned work to spontaneous modelling, the approaches can be  varied, and in this course there is time and guidance to experiment.

It is a space for reflection and learning in an atmosphere of friendship and collaboration, culminating in a wood-fired firing for at least 36 hours. During these hours, the fire will play its part, creating colour and shadows, depositing ash, and finally transforming the clay into ceramics.  The temperature of 1300°C puts the sculptures – and our ideas and care in their execution – literally to the test of fire.

Opening the kiln on the final day is a very special moment: receiving the finished work, seeing it with fresh eyes, is usually a time full of pleasant surprises.

“Whether I’m making a large or small object, I hope it will make sense to have that particular scale and form together, and that it will give off enough visual energy to shake the air around it.” - Jun Kaneko, Ceramics Monthly, 1988
